March 17, Kathmandu – The International Committee of the Association of Nepali Origin (ANO) has drawn the government’s attention to initiatives needed to strengthen the connection between Nepal and Nepalese-origin citizens globally.

The ANO’s international delegation submitted a memorandum to Foreign Minister Balananda Sharma on Tuesday to raise awareness of the matter.

The delegation, including ANO’s International President Dilli Adhikari, Vice President Sushil Pant, General Secretary Chudamani Bhattarai, and Nepal Chapter President Krishna Prasad Sapkota, demanded that identification cards be provided to Nepalese-origin citizens who have lived abroad for generations and requested the establishment of a dedicated desk in the arrivals section of Tribhuvan International Airport.

Additionally, the delegation included the demand for proper management of nearly 7,000 Bhutanese refugees remaining in various camps in eastern Nepal, from a human rights and humanitarian perspective.

ANO’s President Dilli Adhikari highlighted that the organization assists in expanding Nepali identity abroad and informed that with government support, investments surpassing Nepal’s annual budget could be mobilized within the country.

Senior lawyer and ANO Vice President Sushil Kumar Pant emphasized that proceeding with ANO’s initiatives emphasizes Nepalese heart and identity, urging the government to take this matter seriously in the national interest.

Accepting the memorandum, Foreign Minister Balananda Sharma assured that the demands of ANO help promote Nepal’s identity, and a detailed meeting involving relevant agencies will be held soon to make decisions.

Recalling his service in the armed forces, Minister Sharma shared his experience of meeting Nepalese-origin people from generations past and expressed confidence that a meaningful campaign will be carried out to reconnect them with their ancestral country.
