Severe Energy Crisis in Cuba Due to U.S. Sanctions

March 16, Kathmandu — According to Cuba’s national electricity supplier, electricity service has been restored for over 18,000 customers in Havana following a widespread blackout across the island.

This figure accounts for only 2.1 percent of the total consumers in the capital city. Cuba is currently facing an acute shortage of energy and fuel.

The energy crisis has deepened due to disruptions in fuel shipments caused by U.S. sanctions.

For the past three months, Cuba has been unable to receive fuel shipments, resulting in daily power outages (load-shedding) averaging more than 10 hours.

On March 16, a failure in the national transmission line plunged the entire country into darkness.

According to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the energy blockade has left tens of thousands of children and citizens awaiting surgery.
