Kathmandu – Police announced on Tuesday that a series of suicide attacks in northeastern Nigeria has resulted in at least 23 deaths and over 100 injuries.

The city has been destabilized by previous attacks, including an assault on a military center and bomb explosions in a mosque last December, while the ongoing insurgency has spread from rural to interior regions, exacerbating the crisis.

Fighters from Boko Haram and its rival jihadist group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have reportedly increased their attacks in northeastern Nigeria.

The insurgency, which has lasted 16 years, has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 people and displaced approximately 2 million.

Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso stated that preliminary investigations confirm the incidents were carried out by suspects involved in the insurgency.

AFP quoted a counterterrorism source indicating that the death toll from the explosions could rise to 31.

The attackers targeted locations including the city’s main market, the gate of Maiduguri University Teaching Hospital, and the post office flyover.

In a statement issued Tuesday, police confirmed that normalcy has been largely restored in the affected areas and that security forces have intensified monitoring to prevent further incidents in Maiduguri and surrounding regions.
