March 16, Kathmandu – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) reopened its airspace on Tuesday after temporarily closing it for nearly two hours. The closure was a security precaution amid the ongoing conflict involving the US and Israel in its third week, with Iran continuing missile and drone attacks.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, by Monday, the air defense system had successfully intercepted over 300 ballistic missiles and more than 1,600 drones.
The Civil Aviation Authority stated that after a comprehensive evaluation of operational and security conditions and in coordination with relevant agencies, it decided to reopen the airspace. The authority also confirmed ongoing real-time monitoring to maintain the highest level of aviation safety.
The authority described the nearly two-hour full closure as an “extraordinary precaution” aimed at ensuring the safety of flights, crew, and UAE territory amid rapidly evolving regional security conditions.
Previously, drone attacks at Dubai International Airport had disrupted flight services. Limited flight schedules were resumed from Monday following a fire at a fuel storage facility. Officials reported no human casualties in these incidents. This represented the fourth drone-related incident at the airport.
Increasing security tensions in the Middle East have led to cancellations or rerouting of various international flights.
Meanwhile, British Airways announced on Monday an extension of temporary cuts to its Middle East flight schedules. Flights to and from Abu Dhabi, Oman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, and Tel Aviv have been affected.
The airline is continuously reviewing the situation and is in contact with affected passengers to provide alternative travel options.
According to British Airways, eight relief flights have been operated from Muscat, Oman, to assist passengers. Additionally, flights to Singapore and Bangkok have been increased.
