1,200 Prisoners Who Escaped Central Jail Still at Large


March 17, Kathmandu – Over 1,000 prisoners who escaped from the Central Jail in Sundhara on September 10 during the Janajati (JENJI) movement remain at large.

Baikuntha Regmi, Information Officer of the Central Jail, stated that approximately 1,200 prisoners who escaped on September 10 are still unaccounted for.

“As of the morning of September 10, there were 3,880 inmates in the Central Jail. On that day, 3,517 prisoners escaped,” said Information Officer Regmi. “Most of them have since returned, but nearly 1,200 remain missing.”

Currently, there are 3,313 inmates in the Central Jail, including 1,920 convicts and 1,493 detainees. Regmi also reported that the Central Jail houses 1,749 inmates, Bhadra Jail holds 1,250, and the Women’s Jail accommodates 314 prisoners.

The Janajati movement caused minor damage to the Central Jail. The administration noted that all five buildings within the jail remained secure, facilitating the return of the inmates. – Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS)
