March 27, Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress has decided to conduct a review regarding the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekh.
This review will take place during the parliamentary orientation program organized for newly elected members of parliament.
The Congress has not yet issued any formal stance on the government’s arrest of Oli and Lekh on charges related to the Jail Bharo Jail (Jail-in Jail) protest. A senior party official informed that the matter will be examined during the program.
“Today, there is a ‘parliamentary orientation’ program at the party office where we will have a collective discussion,” the official stated. “After reviewing the overall situation, we will release an official position.”
The program aiming to familiarize newly elected MPs with parliamentary practices, procedures, priorities, and the party’s pledges will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
Congress leaders have so far refrained from commenting on the arrests of Oli and Lekh. Sources indicate that internal divisions within the party on this issue have led to hesitation in forming a unified position.
The newly formed government arrested Oli and Lekh early Saturday morning based on recommendations from an investigative commission chaired by Gauribahadur Karki.
However, the Congress party considers the report incomplete and insufficient from the outset. They have decided to establish a committee comprising legal experts, individuals with governance experience, as well as young activists and experts who participated in the Jail Bharo Jail movement to study the report thoroughly.
At a Thursday press conference in Sanepa, party spokesperson Devaraj Chalise stated that the committee will conduct an in-depth review of both the Karki Commission report and the National Human Rights Commission report presented to the government, after which the party will formulate its viewpoint.
