March 27, Kathmandu – Activists of the CPN-UML party have taken to the streets opposing the arrest of former Prime Minister and party Chairman KP Sharma Oli. They staged protests by burning the report prepared by the commission that investigated the Genji movement.

Near the UML central office in Chyasal, party activists burned tires and the Karki Commission report as part of their demonstration. Police presence in the vicinity was minimal.

Some UML activists reportedly used threatening language toward journalists, telling them, “Where were you when the country was burning? Why are you here now? Go back.”

The Karki Commission, formed to investigate the Genji movement, was established under the interim government led by Sushila Karki, with former Special Court Chief Gauri Bahadur Karki heading the commission. Following elections, the current government led by Prime Minister Balen decided to implement the commission’s recommendations yesterday. Soon after this decision on the government’s first day, arrest proceedings began against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

After the arrests of Oli and Lekhak on Saturday morning, the UML party has decided to organize protests nationwide.
