The government is taking serious steps to establish Nepal as the sports hub of South Asia, recognizing sports as a foundation for national unity, human development, and economic prosperity. It has announced plans to build state-of-the-art sports infrastructure across all seven provinces and to upgrade the Tribhuvan University international cricket stadium. Additionally, the government aims to remove political appointments from sports administration, implement professional leadership, institute a transparent budgeting system, and prioritize women’s and inclusive sports policies. Following the House of Representatives election held on Falgun 21, the government led by Balen Shah has integrated sports development as a key pillar in its public governance reform agenda comprising 100 action points. This agenda was crafted based on the manifestos and commitments of the six major political parties that participated in the election. The government plans to develop advanced and accessible sports infrastructure throughout the seven provinces, complete incomplete stadia on schedule, and upgrade the Tribhuvan University international cricket ground to meet international standards.
In sports administration, the government will eliminate political appointments in favor of professional leadership and implement a transparent budget system. From the school level onwards, talent identification will be emphasized, integrating sports as an essential part of the curriculum and regularly organizing competitions to nurture high-performing athletes. The government will also promote adventure sports and ultra-marathons as national pride events, aiming to attract private sector investment. Nepal is envisioned to become a leading destination for adventure sports tourism.
Efforts are underway to professionalize sports by providing athletes with fair remuneration, organizing regular leagues, and ensuring timely prize distribution. Special emphasis will be given to women’s and inclusive sports. Furthermore, the government seeks to promote sports tourism by hosting international and regional competitions and enhance Nepal’s international image through “cricket diplomacy.”
