Microsoft Begins Testing Always-On Agent for Computers

Microsoft is preparing to introduce an always-on agent feature similar to ‘Open-CLA’ on its ‘Microsoft 365 Copilot’ platform. This new functionality is primarily aimed at corporate customers and is expected to operate in both cloud and local environments. The company plans to unveil this technology at the upcoming ‘Build Conference’ scheduled for June.

Microsoft is enhancing ‘Microsoft 365 Copilot’ by adding features akin to ‘Open-CLA.’ According to The Information, this new capability is designed mainly for corporate users and will offer more secure control compared to open-source alternatives. ‘Open-CLA’ is a tool that operates directly on a user’s computer to autonomously complete various tasks on behalf of the user. Microsoft is developing a similar type of agent that can handle complex, multi-step tasks over extended periods.

The technology currently in testing includes key features such as an always-on agent that proactively takes initiative without waiting for user commands. While it is not yet confirmed whether this feature will run locally on the user’s computer or in the cloud, it is expected to support both environments. Microsoft is leveraging Anthropic’s ‘Claude’ model to power some of its agents through collaboration with the AI company Anthropic.

According to The Verge, Microsoft is likely to showcase this new technology at the June Build Conference. Among users of ‘Open-CLA,’ the ‘Mac Mini’ desktop is especially popular. Consequently, Microsoft appears to be targeting its Windows user base with this new feature. The company will also provide more information on the security and capabilities of this new agent.
