- Nepali weddings have become increasingly expensive, often depleting years of savings or increasing debt burdens for ordinary families.
- When planning a wedding, it is essential to first establish an overall budget and allocate it into various categories.
Nowadays, Nepali weddings are becoming extremely costly. Large party palaces, expensive lighting, foreign decorations, multiple ceremonies, and hundreds of guests can quickly drain years of savings from an average family. Without sufficient savings, this often leads to years of additional debt.
However, marriage is a beautiful chapter in life and should not be a matter of showy competition.
By cutting unnecessary expenses during a wedding, it is possible to retain some savings to start a new life. While the desire to impress others and follow flashy trends is natural, striving for an overly extravagant wedding may cause financial difficulties. Reducing costs does not mean foregoing celebration; with proper planning, a wedding can be joyful, memorable, and affordable.
1. Clearly Define the Budget in Advance
Before starting wedding preparations, determine the total budget, such as NPR 500,000, 700,000, or 800,000. This amount should then be divided into categories like catering, clothing, jewelry, photography, and transportation.
Once the budget is set, all decisions should stay within this limit. When discussing with party palaces, openly communicate your budget and ask, “What can be done within this amount?” This helps avoid expensive options. Budgeting requires consultation between both families and parents to prevent financial stress later on.
2. Wise Venue Selection
Large party palaces can cost between NPR 1,500 to 3,500 per plate. Instead, consider budget-friendly venues in the Kathmandu Valley such as community halls, guthi halls, or heritage sites. These places often offer basic decoration, lighting, and parking as part of a package. They are naturally beautiful venues that require minimal costly decor.
3. Destination Weddings – A Good and Affordable Option
The notion that destination weddings are always expensive is incorrect. Small, beautiful weddings can be held at locations like the shore of Pokhara’s Phewa Lake, panoramic Himalayan views of Nagarkot, Chitwan jungle safaris, or places like Dhorpatan and Ilam.
Destination weddings offer several advantages. Guests can be arranged to stay in the same resort or hotel, simplifying logistics. Coordinating travel, accommodation, and food expenses can reduce total costs by 30 to 45 percent. The natural environment also reduces the need for elaborate decoration expenses.
4. Thoughtful Menu Selection
Food is among the highest expenses. Avoid costly starters, chaat counters, and foreign dishes. Prioritize traditional Nepali menus that include dal-bhat, various vegetable dishes, meat, pickles, greens, and roti. These are both delicious and budget-friendly. Instead of Indian or expensive sweets, opt for local sweets like sel roti, khajur, laddoo, and kaju barfi. Reducing the number of starters and chaat items can help cut 20 to 30 percent of food costs.
5. Other Important Cost-Cutting Measures
Limit the Guest List: Invite only close relatives and acquaintances. Limiting the guest count to 150–200 can lead to significant savings.
Decor and Lighting: Choose simple yet elegant decorations. Use local flowers, fabrics, and LED lights. Avoid expensive floral decor.
Reduce the Number of Ceremonies: Instead of holding separate events like engagement, mehendi, gift exchange, bride’s departure, and reception, limit to 2-3 main events. If both families agree, they can even consolidate into a single large event.
Photography and Videography: Select good but budget-friendly photographers instead of costly studios. Keep pre-wedding sessions short and simple.
Important Consideration
A wedding is the union of two people’s love and two families coming together; it is not a competition or a display of wealth. Therefore, it is important to choose happiness, understanding, and memorable experiences over extravagance.
With proper planning, a wonderful, enjoyable, and emotionally fulfilling wedding can be organized within a limited budget. The savings can be invested in a beautiful honeymoon trip, new home decor, or future investments.
