Investigation Committee Formed Under DIG Acharya to Probe Death in Sindhuli Police Custody

April 24, Kathmandu – The Nepal Police Headquarters has constituted a committee to investigate the death of a Dalit youth in police custody in Sindhuli. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has appointed a five-member investigative panel led by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dinesh Kumar Acharya. The committee members include Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravindra Nath Paudel from the UN Branch of Nepal Police Headquarters, Inspector Indrajit Sunar from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Inspector Prem Regmi from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, and Deputy Inspector Rajeshwar Sapkota.
IGP Karki has instructed the committee to complete the investigation and submit the report within seven days.
According to police reports, 23-year-old Shreekrishna Bik, son of Dal Bahadur Bik from Jumlide Danda, Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-3 in Sindhuli, was in judicial custody at the Khurkot Police Station in connection with an investigation into a rape case. On April 19, the police claim he was found hanging in the custody cell’s toilet using his own shirt as a noose. He was subsequently taken for medical treatment but died during the process, according to the police.
However, family members and rights activists have expressed doubts about the circumstances of his death. Several public representatives, including members of parliament, have raised questions about the police’s role, organizing protests and pressure campaigns. Amid increasing public pressure, the police formed the investigation committee to look into the matter.
