20 Members to Be Removed from National Sports Council Following Government Ordinance

An ordinance issued by the President on the government’s recommendation will lead to the removal of 20 members from the National Sports Council. While the 37-member board of the Council still awaits the appointment of one member, Vice-Chairman Dhurba Acharya has resigned. With the secretary’s term having ended and no new appointment made, Joint Secretary Ramcharitra Mehtal has been assigned the responsibilities of the member secretary. Kathmandu, 3rd Baisakh – According to the new ordinance introduced by the government, 20 members of the National Sports Council (Rakhap) will be removed from their positions. This process is underway under the ‘Special Provisions for the Removal of Public Officials’ ordinance, issued by the President based on government recommendation. The Council’s 37-member board is yet to fill one vacancy. The 20 members appointed during the previous government’s tenure are those to be removed. Vice-Chairman Dhurba Acharya had earlier submitted his resignation. Although the member secretary’s term has expired, no replacement has been made, so Ramcharitra Mehtal, Joint Secretary of the ministry, has been entrusted with the member secretary’s duties. The secretaries of all seven provinces, along with representatives from three departments – Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force – serve as ex officio permanent members. Furthermore, the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, and the Joint Secretary of the Sports Development Division also serve as ex officio members. The Sports Minister is designated to chair the board.
