Barcelona Must Wait Until El Clásico to Secure Title, Historic Moment Possible

Following Real Madrid’s 2–0 victory over Espanyol, Barcelona will have to wait longer to claim the La Liga title. Barcelona can become champions if they secure at least a draw against Real Madrid in the upcoming El Clásico match at Camp Nou next Sunday. If Barcelona wins their final four matches of the season, they will reach 100 points and have the chance to win their record 33rd La Liga title. Kathmandu, April 21.
A victory in the upcoming El Clásico would crown Barcelona as La Liga champions. Real Madrid’s win over Espanyol last night delayed Barcelona’s title celebrations. The match at RCDE Stadium ended 2–0 in favor of Real Madrid. Vinícius Júnior scored both goals in the second half, securing the victory for his team. His first goal came from an excellent one-two with Gonzalo García, and the second was set up by Jude Bellingham’s backheel pass.
Earlier, Vinícius had a shot that hit the post and bounced back. Espanyol’s Omar El Hilali was shown a red card for a foul on Vinícius, but following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the decision was overturned. This result means Barcelona must continue to wait for the title. They will be champions if they manage at least a draw in the El Clásico at Camp Nou next Sunday.
In La Liga’s 97-year history, no team has ever clinched the title during an El Clásico match, which could make this a historic first. Barcelona currently hold an 11-point lead over Real Madrid and, by winning their remaining four games, would reach 100 points—tying the record previously set by Real Madrid (2011–12) and Barcelona (2012–13). Should Barcelona secure the title this season, it will be their 29th La Liga championship and set a new record for most wins in a single season with 33 victories. On the other hand, this season has proved disappointing for Real Madrid, as they are on course for a trophyless campaign for only the second time since 2009–10.
