Why Is US Military Presence Increasing in Europe?

The United States maintains a significant military presence in Europe, with dozens of bases hosting over 80,000 troops.

Since World War II, the US military presence has been a cornerstone of European security, particularly concentrated in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, there were approximately 84,000 US troops in Europe at the beginning of 2025. This number fluctuates periodically based on deployments and training schedules.

US research institutions have noted that following the war in Ukraine, troop deployments in Eastern Europe increased, with numbers ranging from 75,000 to 115,000 troops.

Germany is the largest center of US military presence in Europe. The Ramstein Air Base there is the largest US air base outside the United States. The US European Command headquarters is in Stuttgart, while the Europe-Africa Command is located in Wiesbaden. Significant training centers are also found in Grafenwohr and Hohenfels.

Around 38,000 US troops are stationed in Germany, along with thousands of civilian employees and their families.

Italy ranks second in terms of military bases and troop numbers, hosting five US military bases. Among them, Aviano Air Base is the most strategically significant, considered critical both for the US and Italy. Approximately 8,500 American troops are based here.

Aviano Air Base is located roughly 80 kilometers from Venice in northern Italy. According to the MyBizGuide website, it stands as one of NATO’s most important military bases.

Other US bases in Italy include Camp Darby, Camp Ederle in Vicenza, the Sigonella Naval Base in Sicily, and the Naval Command in Naples, establishing Italy as a critical US military hub in the Mediterranean region.

Strategic Allies

The United Kingdom is a key strategic partner for the US, hosting numerous American military bases. As a longstanding and trusted ally, the UK has welcomed many US installations on its soil.

US F-35 fighter jets are stationed at RAF Lakenheath. RAF Mildenhall supports air operations and military logistics, while RAF Fairford serves as a landing site for large bombers and functions primarily for NATO nuclear missions.

Poland also hosts multiple US military bases, with the Redzikowo base being especially important. Officially opened as the first permanent US base in November 2024, it forms part of NATO’s missile defense system. Other bases include Camp Kosciuszko, home to the US Army’s Fifth Corps, the Boveda base used for storing military equipment, Lask Air Base housing US Air Force squadrons and F-16 aircraft, and forward operating sites at Skovorzhina and Boleslawiec.

According to Poland’s Ministry of Defense, the importance of the US military presence in Poland amplified significantly after Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Another vital US military base in Europe is the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, considered the most strategic installation for US operations in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. It permanently hosts US Air Force units that support military missions.

The Role of US Military Bases in Europe

US troops stationed in Europe undertake a variety of roles including border security, military logistics, and the training of allied forces.

At Germany’s Büchel Air Base, American forces monitor 10 to 20 B-61 nuclear bombs stored there, according to information available from the Council on Foreign Relations.

As part of a partnership program between the US National Guard and Eastern European countries, troops from the Pennsylvania National Guard have conducted joint military exercises with Lithuanian forces.

US 10th Special Forces troops primarily based in Germany are providing specialized military training to Ukrainian forces.

Since 2022, the US has provided Ukraine with more military aid than any other country, including large amounts of weapons and equipment.

According to US research organizations, the American presence in Europe has played a crucial role in training Ukrainian troops to operate new weapons and in facilitating the delivery of arms and ammunition to Ukraine.

Types of Deployments

There are primarily four types of US military deployments in Europe:

Permanent Deployments: Troops permanently stationed at European bases engaged in defense operations.

Rotational Deployments: Troops deployed for extended periods on a rotating basis to maintain NATO readiness.

National Guard Partnership Programs: US National Guard units train in coordination with European militaries.

Temporary Deployments: Units sent for short-term joint military exercises.

Why Is It Important?

US military bases around the world are central to defense, diplomacy, and humanitarian missions.

In Europe, continuous US military presence has been maintained since World War II.

This presence serves several key purposes:

  • Deterring threats from the eastern region
  • Ensuring frontline defense capabilities
  • Strengthening NATO alliances through joint training and integrated operations

According to MyBizGuide, the military deployments initiated to maintain stability in Europe after World War II have evolved into a vital component of Europe’s collective security architecture today.
