April 9, Kathmandu – A two-day international conference centered on the situation, prevailing challenges, and intergenerational knowledge transfer of senior citizens has begun in Kathmandu.

The conference, organized by the Manmohan Memorial Foundation, was inaugurated by President Ramchandra Paudel.

Addressing the conference, CPN (UML) leader Ishwar Pokharel stated that senior citizens should not be limited to the framework of social security and respect alone but should be recognized as vital sources of knowledge and experience.

He emphasized the importance of utilizing the experiences of senior citizens in state governance, social transformation, and family prosperity.

Recalling the contribution of the first democratically elected communist Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari, who initiated social security programs in Nepal, leader Pokharel mentioned that the foundation continues various constructive activities to uphold Adhikari’s vision and dedication.

Established in 1999, the foundation has been conducting country tours, honor programs, health camps, and literary activities for senior citizens. Additionally, Pokharel noted that the foundation has established Manmohan Technical University in Morang to provide youths with technical education and promote self-employment opportunities.

“It is gratifying that the principle of respecting senior citizens, as instilled by the late Adhikari, has been embraced by governments and society at all levels. Now, this legacy must be further refined by integrating their experiences into the national development agenda,” he stated.
