Nepal Holds Its First Flying Disc Competition: How Is the Game Played?

Flying disc is a sport where a disc is thrown and played mid-air. Generally, there are four main types of flying disc events, among which Ultimate Frisbee is the most popular.

April 13, Kathmandu – Nepal is set to host its first-ever flying disc competition. The Nepal Flying Disc Federation will organize the ‘Himalaya Spirit Cup’ Ultimate Frisbee tournament on May 22 and 23.

The event will take place at the Kapan Handball Ground, with five teams confirmed to participate, according to federation General Secretary Santosh Khadka. From the 50 registered players affiliated with the federation, four teams will be formed.

One team is confirmed to participate from Hope Foundation, while discussions are ongoing to involve a team from the British School, Khadka added.

League phase matches will be held on May 22 and the final competition on May 23. The organizers hope this event will mark the beginning of a new sports culture. Winners will be awarded trophies and certificates. The federation aims to hold such competitions annually, Khadka stated.

According to Khadka, the Nepal Flying Disc Federation was registered with the World Flying Disc Federation last October.

Since the federation plans to expand committees across four provinces and 20 districts, it has yet to register with the National Sports Council (Rakhap). He noted that the registration process with Rakhap is moving forward and will be completed soon.

How is Flying Disc Played?

Flying disc is played by throwing a disc in the air. There are four main types of events within flying disc, with Ultimate Frisbee being the most popular. In this event, each team consists of seven players who pass the disc to each other, aiming to reach the opponent’s ‘end zone’ to score points. Both ends of the field have an end zone.

The event organized by the Nepal Flying Disc Federation follows this format. However, due to the smaller field size, teams will consist of five players each. Two teams will compete in two halves totaling 100 minutes. The team that successfully reaches the opponent’s end zone with the disc during this time wins.

Another flying disc event is Disc Golf, which is similar to golf but uses a disc instead of a ball and club. Players aim to throw the disc into a basket. It can be played individually or in groups, with the highest number of successful shots determining the winner.

In the Guts event, one team throws the disc while the opposing team tries to catch it with one hand. If the catching team fails, the throwing team scores a point, unless the disc goes out of bounds. The competition may have a set point target or time limit.

Freestyle Frisbee is another event, played solo or in pairs. Players perform various tricks, control, and spins with the disc. Scores are awarded based on these performances. The team with the highest score within a set time frame is declared the winner.
