Four ministers from the ruling Labour Party in the UK have resigned, while 87 Labour MPs have called for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to step down. Amid significant losses for Labour in recently concluded local elections, the right-wing Reform UK party achieved unexpected success. Prime Minister Starmer has vowed to remain in office, receiving support from 112 Labour MPs. London, 30 April.
The political situation in the UK has reached a high level of instability. Two years after winning a strong majority, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is facing increasing pressure to resign as Prime Minister, with four ministers resigning from their posts. Among the ruling party’s 403 MPs, 87 have demanded either an immediate resignation or a timeline for it. On Tuesday, ministers Jess Phillips, Miatta Fahnbulleh, Alex Davies-Jones, and Zahawi Ahmed resigned from their positions.
Phillips stated that she could no longer serve in the current leadership and urged Starmer to step down, saying, “I am tired of seeing opportunities for progress blocked and delayed.” These political developments occurred a day before King Charles III is scheduled to open the next parliamentary session and outline the government’s plans. Last week (7 May), following Labour’s significant losses in local elections across England and national parliamentary elections in Scotland and Wales, widespread dissatisfaction within the party has intensified.
