The gas explosion occurred at 7:29 PM local time on Friday at a mine operated by the Tongzhou Group, killing many workers on the spot. At the time, 247 workers were on duty. According to Chinese state media, the explosion claimed 82 lives. Chinese President Xi Jinping has stated that treatment is ongoing for the injured and that search efforts for others are continuing.
