Three workers have died after falling into the sea from a vessel operated by Malaysia’s state energy company Petronas.

On Sunday afternoon, the incident occurred while workers were performing maintenance on a lifeboat aboard the floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel named ‘FSO Sepat’.

The ship was located near Malaysia’s eastern coastal state of Terengganu. During the maintenance, the lifeboat fell into the sea, resulting in the deaths of three workers. Another worker was seriously injured in the accident.

The company confirmed the incident in a statement released today, stating it happened at approximately 12:50 PM on Sunday.

All four individuals who were rescued were taken to hospital; three were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The injured worker is receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.

The company added in its statement, “An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway in coordination with the relevant authorities.”

According to local police, the workers had boarded the lifeboat to descend towards the sea’s surface for maintenance work. At that time, the hook securing the boat suddenly detached. Following the snap of the rope, the lifeboat fell directly into the sea.
