A 22-year-old laborer from Sarlahi died of asphyxiation today while digging a well in Padariya, Gaushala Municipality-12, Mahottari. The victim, Basant Kumar Mahto, was cutting wooden supports about 36 feet underground when he lost consciousness. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead, according to police. 17 Jestha, Jaleshwar (Mahottari).
According to Panchlal Gole, spokesperson of the District Police Office Mahottari, the deceased laborer Basant Kumar Mahto was a resident of Ishwarpur Municipality-13, Sarlahi. He succumbed while working underground in Padariya village of Gaushala Municipality-12.
Police Deputy Superintendent Gole stated that Mahto was inside the well approximately 36 feet below ground, cutting wooden supports when he asphyxiated. Locals immediately rescued the unconscious man and took him to Ishwarpur Municipal Hospital in Bayalbas for treatment, where doctors declared him dead.
The Mahottari District Police Office has confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
