Customs Duty Exemption Limit Raised to NPR 500 for Goods Brought from India

The government has announced a new list specifying the items and their customs duty exemption limits that Nepali travelers can bring while going abroad. Nepalis returning after completing 12 months of foreign employment are now allowed to bring televisions up to 65 inches with duty exemption. For travelers crossing via land routes, the customs duty exemption limit has been increased from NPR 100 to NPR 500. Kathmandu, 20 Jestha — In accordance with arrangements related to Jhiti Guntha, the government has raised the value threshold for goods brought from India into Nepal to NPR 500. Previously, customs duties were applicable on goods valued above NPR 100, but the new financial bill has amended this limit upward. The prior NPR 100 limit had sparked nationwide protests because ordinary citizens were required to pay customs for goods exceeding that amount. The government has now increased this threshold through the budget.

Additionally, students studying in India can bring one laptop, tablet, or computer without being subject to customs duties. The government has released a new list of items that Nepali travelers are allowed to carry, most of which remain unchanged from last year’s list, with some modifications in items and limits. According to the Ministry of Finance, Nepalis residing permanently in Nepal can bring personal use items back from abroad with full customs exemption.

The exempted items include used clothing, bedding, household goods, old items, medicines brought for treatment, assistive devices used by physically disabled persons, and gold and silver jewelry within the limits specified in Schedule 4, Case 1 of the Customs Duty Act 2081. Additionally, one each of used tablets, laptops or desktop computers, watches, cameras, video cameras, and mobile phones can be imported duty-free. Nepali workers returning after 12 months of foreign employment are eligible for customs exemption on televisions up to 65 inches; previously, this exemption was available only to citizens listed in the Social Security Fund, who could bring a television of up to 32 inches duty-free. This exemption can be availed only once.
