21 Jestha, Gorkha — Palungtar Municipality in Gorkha has recognized couples who have entered intercaste marriages. On the occasion of the 21st Caste Discrimination and Untouchability Elimination Day, the municipality announced that three couples were honored on Thursday.

Mayor Bibash Chintan felicitated the couples James Koirala and Ganga Lama from Ward No. 1, Sujan Thapa Chhetri and Ranjita Kumal from Ward No. 5, and Bardan Shrestha and Sachin Gurung from the same ward.

“We honored them because intercaste marriages play an invaluable role in advancing social transformation,” he said.

The couples were honored with shawls and certificates of appreciation, according to official Devkota.

On the same occasion, a speech competition was conducted on the topic ‘The Role of Students in the Practical Elimination of Caste Discrimination.’

In the competition, Prince Giri from United Boarding School secured first place, Rozina Gurung of Triveni Secondary School was second, Dipshikha Bakhrel of Bhawani Secondary School took third, and Samikshya Ramtel from Annapurna Secondary School received the consolation prize.

They were also awarded cash prizes. A total of 20 students participated in the competition.
