The newly appointed captain will lead the Indian team in the upcoming series against Ireland and England, as well as at the Asian Games. Former captain Suryakumar Yadav has not been selected for these three series due to poor performance. Kathmandu, June 6 – The selection committee meeting held on Saturday decided to name Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain. Iyer will lead the team in the upcoming series against Ireland and England, and at the Asian Games, while Suryakumar Yadav has been left out of the squad for these tournaments.
Iyer has delivered exceptional performances both as a captain and batsman in recent years. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and had previously taken Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals.
In the 2025 IPL season, Iyer captained Punjab Kings and guided the team to the final. Despite remaining unbeaten in the first seven games that season, the team failed to secure a playoff spot. Individually, he scored 604 runs in IPL 2025 and added 498 runs in IPL 2026.
Suryakumar Yadav, who was part of the T20 World Cup-winning squad, has recently struggled with form. He scored 242 runs in 9 innings during the World Cup and managed only 270 runs in 13 matches in IPL 2026.
