Germany’s Rising Star Florian Wirtz Joins Liverpool After Leading Bayer Leverkusen to Bundesliga Glory
Following his pivotal role in securing the Bundesliga title for Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz has transferred to English Premier League club Liverpool for the second-highest transfer fee in Bundesliga history. Despite missing the 2022 World Cup due to injury, Wirtz has stated that winning the 2026 World Cup remains his primary ambition. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has structured the German national team around Wirtz, granting him the freedom to express his talent on the pitch.
Located in Kathmandu on June 14, Wirtz combines exceptional dribbling skills, high football IQ, and outstanding stamina, positioning him as a player capable of surprising the world at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Nagelsmann’s confidence in Wirtz is evident, as the entire German squad has been built around him, allowing the youngster to operate with complete autonomy during matches.
On his best days, Wirtz is virtually unstoppable. He commands the game, plays a decisive role with the ball, and suffocates the opposition by leaving them no space to breathe. Having come through the Cologne academy, the midfielder boasts an impressive international record with Germany, having scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists in 39 appearances. He notably played a crucial role in Germany’s victory at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship at the age of 18.
At club level, Wirtz was instrumental in securing Bayer Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023–24 season. Under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso, whom Wirtz considers the most influential figure in his career, the team achieved a domestic double by winning both the league and the German Cup, and also completed a treble by claiming the Super Cup. Their only disappointment that season was losing to Atalanta in the Europa League final. Over 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists before his big-money transfer to Liverpool, marking the second-highest transfer fee for a player moving out of the Bundesliga.
Alonso has praised Wirtz’s talent by comparing him to Lionel Messi: “Messi is exceptional because he always delivers the right pass at the right time. Florian does the same, and that’s why he’s an outstanding player.”
Former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard expressed his desire to play alongside Wirtz, saying, “I wish I had the chance to play with this kid.” Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has also highlighted Wirtz’s exceptional impact in midfield, while German teammate Jamal Musiala has noted how enjoyable it is to play with him and anticipates developing strong chemistry on the pitch. Wirtz’s World Cup journey was interrupted by an ACL injury despite being selected for the 2022 tournament, where Germany was eliminated at the group stage for the second consecutive time.
