Controversy Arises in Chitwan After Dog Is Given Human Emergency Contraceptive Medication

In Sauraha, Chitwan, a dog was given a human emergency contraceptive pill during treatment, which was followed by the dog’s death, sparking public controversy. On 28th Jestha in Kathmandu, concerns have been raised about the use of incorrect medication and procedures in the dog’s treatment. Allegations have surfaced that the drugs used by technicians during the dog’s euthanasia were inappropriate. Experts have indicated that such medications could cause more pain rather than ensuring a peaceful death for the dog.
Details from Chitwan reveal that the dog was administered a human emergency contraceptive tablet. According to Deepa KC, field supervisor at Animal Nepal Chitwan, the dog belonged to a resident of Sauraha. The dog had recently been in contact with another dog. Due to health issues, the owner took the dog to a nearby private clinic for treatment. Initial treatment involved the clinic recommending the human emergency contraceptive pill ‘I-Pill’ along with multivitamins.
The dog’s abdomen kept swelling, leading the owner to suspect pregnancy, which was later confirmed through testing. Being approximately 33 days pregnant, the dog was brought to the clinic for treatment and surgical intervention. However, during surgery, the dog’s condition suddenly deteriorated and it died. The owner stated that technicians initially handled the surgery before the doctor arrived.
A post-mortem examination was requested to determine the cause of death. Initial attempts to conduct a private post-mortem were declined by various parties. Subsequently, under the coordination of the District Police Office, an agreement was reached to perform the post-mortem at the Animal Service Office. However, uncertainty remains regarding legal procedures and responsibilities. This incident has triggered widespread debate about animal treatment services, the accountability of private clinics, and the protocols for medication use.
