Medical Officers at BP Koirala Institute Resume Work After Reaching Agreement

Medical house officers at BP Koirala Health Sciences Institute, who had been protesting, have returned to work following a four-point agreement with the acting vice-chancellor. The house officers had staged a sit-in at the vice-chancellor’s office compound from 8 June, demanding higher salaries. With the appointment of officials and formation of the executive committee at the institute, it was agreed that their demands would be addressed in the first meeting of the new committee.

28 June, Sunsari — A four-point agreement was reached on Thursday between the protesting medical house officers and the acting vice-chancellor of BP Koirala Health Sciences Institute. Following the agreement, the house officers resumed their duties. According to acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Indra Limbu, it was agreed that recommendations regarding their demands would be made during the first meeting after appointing officials and forming the Executive Committee (KAS).

He stated, “Currently, the BP Institute is without appointed officials, and the Executive Committee has not yet been formed. Since addressing their demands falls under the authority of the full-time officials and the Executive Committee, it was agreed that recommendations would be made following their appointments and formation.” The medical officers had protested on the grounds that their basic salary of NPR 34,500 is insufficient given the current economic situation, workload, and professional responsibilities.

The house officers had been on a sit-in protest at the vice-chancellor’s office premises since 8 June. As part of the agreement, it was decided that the house officers would also receive the NPR 3,000 increase in allowance, effective from mid-July 2025, which has been provided to other government public servants but has not yet been extended to the institute’s faculty and staff. This recommendation will be made to ensure equal benefits to all teachers and employees at the institute. The agreement was signed by acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Limbu, department heads including Surgery Department Head Professor Shailesh Adhikari, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Surya Prasad Rimal, house officers Dr. Pujan Pokhrel, Dr. Pragesh Mahto, Dr. Bibek Mishra, and Director Yadav.
