Sri Lanka Becomes More Accessible for Nepali Travelers with Free Online Visa Facility

Sri Lanka has announced the provision of free online visa services to citizens of nearly 40 countries, including Nepal. This island jewel in the Indian Ocean is known for its misty tea plantations in the morning, ancient historical ruins by day, and soothing sea waves at sunset that wash away travelers’ fatigue. Now, visiting this country has become even easier for Nepali tourists.

Following Sri Lanka’s recent decision to grant free online visas to nationals of approximately 40 countries, including Nepal, traveling there has become more affordable. Previously, travelers had to bear visa fees, but this cost is now eliminated, making Sri Lanka a budget-friendly foreign destination for many Nepali travelers. The flight from Kathmandu to Colombo takes about 3–4 hours. With its short distance, cultural similarities, delicious cuisine, and diverse landscapes ranging from beaches to hills, Sri Lanka is currently one of the most attractive tourist destinations in South Asia.

Just like in Nepal, Buddhist cultural influences are deeply rooted here as well. The prayers resonating from monasteries, the presence of monks, and the tranquil atmosphere around stupas provide a familiar sense of warmth for Nepali visitors. The locals are hospitable and welcoming, ensuring a memorable stay. Whether you seek relaxation by the sea or have interests in history and culture, Sri Lanka offers something special for everyone. Destinations such as Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Yala National Park further enrich the travel experience here.

No visit to Sri Lanka is complete without sampling its cuisine. The food is rich in spices, lentils, curry, and rice that remind Nepali visitors of home flavors. Coconut, a major product of Sri Lanka, is widely used in many dishes. Popular specialties include ‘Kottu Roti’ and ‘Hoppers.’ Colombo is also becoming an attractive destination for casino tourism. Generally, a 7-day trip to Sri Lanka can be planned with a moderate budget ranging from NPR 70,000 to 120,000 per person. Costs may vary depending on airfare, hotel standards, and travel style.
