Colombia Secures Impressive Opening Win in World Cup

June 18, Kathmandu – Luis Diaz’s decisive goal in the second half helped Colombia defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Group K fixture took place at the historic Azteca Stadium in Mexico. Colombia’s goals were scored by Daniel Munoz, Luis Diaz, and Jaminton Campaz. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan, making their World Cup debut, found the net through Abbosbek Fazullayev.

Daniel Munoz gave Colombia the lead in the 40th minute, skillfully finishing a one-touch pass from Luis Diaz. Uzbekistan’s Abbosbek Fazullayev equalized in the 60th minute, becoming the first Uzbek player to score in a FIFA World Cup.

However, Uzbekistan’s equalizer was short-lived. Within five minutes, Luis Diaz restored Colombia’s lead at 2-1. Later, in the ninth minute of second-half injury time, Jaminton Campaz sealed the victory for Colombia with a third goal, ensuring a 3-1 win. Following this triumph, Colombia tops Group K with 3 points. In another match of the group, Portugal and DR Congo played to a 1-1 draw, sharing the points.
