Despite a defeat to Switzerland at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada has secured its place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time. On June 11, in Kathmandu, Canada achieved this historic milestone at the tournament. Although they lost the match on home soil, the Canadian team qualified for the knockout rounds by finishing as runners-up in Group B, while Switzerland topped the group.
Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina finished with the same number of points, but Canada advanced to the second position based on goal difference, leaving Bosnia in third. Bosnia and Herzegovina also remains in contention for reaching the knockout phase.
Canada previously played in the FIFA World Cup in 1986 and 2022 but were eliminated in the group stage both times. This time, playing as a co-host, Canada reaching the knockout rounds on home turf marks a significant achievement. Canada is one of the three co-host nations this tournament, alongside the United States and Mexico, all of whom have now progressed to the knockout stage. The United States and Mexico had secured their knockout round berths earlier in the competition.
