What Type of Underwear Is Comfortable to Wear During Hot Weather?

As the hot season begins, rising temperatures, increased sweating, and occasional discomfort can become common. In such conditions, many focus on selecting outerwear, often overlooking the importance of choosing the right underwear. Proper selection of underwear that comes in direct contact with the skin can provide comfort during the heat while also helping to prevent skin problems, odor, and infections.

The body naturally produces sweat to regulate temperature during warm weather. However, when sweat remains on the skin for prolonged periods, it creates an environment that promotes the growth of bacteria and fungi. Areas such as underarms, beneath the breasts, the inner thighs, and around the private parts are particularly susceptible to such issues. Therefore, selecting underwear in hot weather should not be based solely on fashion or design but must prioritize fabric quality, fit, comfort, and health considerations.

Why is choosing the right underwear important in summer? The human body contains millions of sweat glands that produce sweat to cool the body in hot conditions. If the underwear worn does not absorb sweat effectively, the skin remains damp for extended periods, potentially causing rashes, chafing, unpleasant odors, fungal infections, and skin irritation. When selecting underwear for summer, the three main factors to consider are fabric material, breathability, and comfortable fitting.

A 2018 study led by Lydia Minguez Alarcon from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, published in the reputable Human Reproduction scientific journal, involved 656 male participants. The research found that men who wore loose-fitting (open) underwear had higher sperm motility and total sperm count, likely due to lower temperatures around the testes. Similarly, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women avoid overly tight clothing and opt for underwear made from at least cotton layers. This facilitates better air circulation around sensitive areas and helps reduce unnecessary dampness and irritation.
