Semifinal Lineups Confirmed in Kathmandu Metropolitan Cup Badminton Tournament
The semifinal lineups for men’s singles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles have been finalized in the Kathmandu Metropolitan Cup Ward-Level Badminton Tournament. The tournament’s final matches, including the semifinals and finals, will take place on Sunday, culminating in the announcement of the champions. The tournament, jointly organized by Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the Kathmandu District Badminton Association, is now in its semifinal stages across the men’s singles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles categories. On Saturday, the remaining 24 group stage matches were completed at the NOC Earthquake Memorial Covered Hall in Dallu, Kathmandu-15. Simultaneously, knockout rounds for men’s singles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles also began.
In men’s singles, Babish Thapa (Ward No. 10), Gaurav Tandukar (Ward No. 28), Swayam Manandhar (Ward No. 15), and Sushant Prajapati (Ward No. 4) have secured their semifinal spots. In the quarterfinals, Babish defeated Kumar Bahadur Aryal, and Gaurav overcame Riteshraj Shrestha. Swayam advanced by defeating Biki Shrestha, while Sushant triumphed over Ayush Bikram Shah.
In women’s singles, Ajarenka Sherchan (Ward No. 15), Shreya Maharjan (Ward No. 15), Samrina Shrestha (Ward No. 23), and Shista Kuikel (Ward No. 6) have reached the semifinals. The 11 participating women were divided into two groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the final four. Mixed doubles matches commenced on Saturday. The pairs of Anish R. Tuladhar-Vidya Shrestha, Saksham Dhakal-Vibha Thapa, Raju Deuja-Ambika Pandit Chhetri, and Naresh Shrestha-Punsova Maharjan have all progressed to the semifinals. The final day of the tournament on Sunday will feature both the semifinal and final matches.
In the women’s singles semifinals, Ajarenka Sherchan will face Shreya Maharjan in the first match, while Samrina Shrestha will compete against Shista Kuikel in the second. For men’s singles, Babish Thapa will challenge Gaurav Tandukar in the first semifinal, and Swayam Manandhar will play against Sushant Prajapati in the second. In mixed doubles, the pair Anish-Vidya will take on Raju-Ambika in one semifinal, while Saksham-Vibha will compete against Naresh-Punsova in the other. With participants from all 32 wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, this tournament is recognized as the largest community-level badminton competition in the capital.
