June 22, Kathmandu – Brazilian football star Neymar has announced his retirement from international football. Following Norway’s 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, the star forward declared his departure from the national team. The 34-year-old Neymar concluded his international career as the highest goalscorer in Brazil’s men’s national team history, having scored 80 goals in 129 appearances.
Emotional after the defeat, Neymar said, “I gave it my all. My journey started in this very stadium and it ends here. Now everything is over.” Neymar made his international debut for Brazil in 2010 and participated in four FIFA World Cups. He also competed in two Olympic Games, playing a crucial role in securing a silver medal in 2012 and a gold medal for Brazil in 2016.
In the 2026 World Cup, Neymar was not fully fit, appearing as a substitute in two matches. He entered the field in the second half against Scotland during the group stage and scored his only tournament goal via a penalty during injury time against Norway in the Round of 16. After stunning Brazil, Norway will now compete against the winner of the Mexico vs. England match for a place in the semifinals.
