Meta has initiated the construction of a new data center in Alberta, Canada, investing $10 billion to establish a facility with a 1-gigawatt capacity. This marks Meta’s first data center in Canada, aimed at advancing AI infrastructure development while generating sustainable employment opportunities.
The project is located in Sturgeon County, Alberta, where Meta plans to build its 33rd data center worldwide. The facility will be specifically designed to support AI-related operations, reflecting the company’s commitment to enhancing its AI capabilities amid increasing competitive pressures, particularly from Chinese AI labs that have started developing powerful models with limited resources.
Meta has already invested over $600 billion in AI infrastructure within the United States. The Canadian project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and, upon completion, provide stable employment for approximately 300 workers. Meta has emphasized its commitment to supporting the local community economically and adopting environmentally friendly practices in its electricity and water usage.
According to Meta’s first-quarter report of 2026, the company plans additional investments ranging from $125 billion to $145 billion within the year. As the AI competition intensifies, processing power remains a critical factor. Meta is leveraging all available resources to develop superior AI models and maintain its lead over competitors.
