Why Is Youri Tielemans Missing from Belgium’s Lineup Against Spain?

Midfielder Youri Tielemans was removed from the starting eleven, with Hans Vanaken added to the team in his place. Tielemans was sidelined due to an injury sustained during the warm-up before Belgium’s FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal match. Coach Rudy Garcia made a last-minute tactical adjustment by including Vanaken in the squad.

Belgium has not disclosed the nature of Tielemans’ injury, and further tests will be conducted after the match to determine his availability for upcoming games. On June 11, prior to the quarterfinal against Spain, Tielemans was injured during warm-up exercises, necessitating the late change in Belgium’s lineup.

Following Tielemans’ withdrawal, Coach Garcia altered his strategy accordingly. Vanaken’s inclusion adds a new option to Belgium’s midfield. It remains unclear whether Tielemans will be available as a substitute during the game. Post-match assessments will clarify the severity of his injury. If Belgium advances to the next stage, his participation will depend on his recovery status.
