June 27, Kathmandu – Ahead of the proposed talks on Saturday, the United States has demanded a public commitment from Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. The US administration has pressured Iran to officially announce that the Strait of Hormuz remains open. Furthermore, Iran is expected to publicly pledge not to fire on commercial vessels.
According to a CBS News report, the White House seeks to establish that firing upon commercial ships was a mistake by Iran. Citing anonymous officials, the US media claimed that Iran has admitted in private discussions with President Donald Trump’s advisers that opening fire on vessels was an error. However, Iran has attributed responsibility for the incident to one of its rebel extremist groups.
In the ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran earlier this month, Iran promised to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships. CBS News quoted senior US officials who stated that Iran claims the extremist rebel faction carried out the attacks on commercial vessels. According to Iran, this group sought to disrupt the ongoing dialogue between the two countries. One US official noted that Iran has returned to the negotiating table, recognized its mistake, and requested to continue the talks.
