June 27, Kathmandu – Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the greatest batsmen, has been inducted into the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Hall of Fame.
The ICC has honored Ganguly by including him among the legends of world cricket, recognizing his significant role in elevating Indian cricket to new heights.
“I feel honored to be included in the ICC Hall of Fame. Having my name associated with the great players of cricket is one of the most distinct moments of my life,” Ganguly said.
Over his 16-year international career, Ganguly accumulated 18,575 runs in Tests and One Day Internationals (ODIs). He scored 38 international centuries.
He debuted in Test cricket against England at Lord’s in 1996, scoring a century in his very first match. He followed that with another century at Trent Bridge, immediately establishing his caliber.
In ODI cricket, Ganguly formed one of the world’s most formidable opening pairs alongside Sachin Tendulkar. He was especially renowned for his elegant offside shots, which made him a celebrated figure in world cricket.
Taking over the Indian team captaincy in 2000, Ganguly instilled aggressive mindset and confidence within the squad. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup.
He played a crucial role in nurturing young talents such as Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Zaheer Khan, helping build a new generation of Indian cricket stars. Many of these players later became key members of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team.
Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008 and is regarded as one of Indian cricket’s finest captains and batsmen.
After his playing career, he has remained active in cricket administration and has served as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
