June 11, Sunsari – Dharan Sub-Metropolitan Municipality honored Preeti Rateria Agrawal, a Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) climber, this Sunday.
Preeti was paraded through Dharan’s entrance at Tinkune before being officially honored at the Sub-Metropolitan Office.
Acting Chief Indra Vikram Beghale congratulated her as the first Marwadi woman to climb Mount Everest.
He highlighted her multifaceted contributions not only in mountaineering but also in art, psychology, and alternative therapies, describing her as a role model for the youth.
He stated, “This honor for courageous Preeti is given with pride by the entire Dharan community.”
Preeti successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest at 5:57 a.m. on Jestha 7, completing the climb in 12 hours.
Receiving the honor, she said, “This recognition from Dharan Sub-Metropolitan Municipality has made me extremely happy. I never imagined such a moment. I will never forget this honor from Dharan and its people.”
Though Preeti, 49, took 12 hours to reach the summit from base camp, she took 24 hours to descend safely.
Born in Dharan and raised in Kathmandu and Mumbai, Preeti showed athleticism and participated in running competitions from her school days.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in art and design from a college in Mumbai and returning home, she decided to become the first Marwadi woman to undertake adventurous journeys.
She climbed Mount Everest with the support of climbing guides Pasang Sherpa and Nima Thinzak Sherpa from The Summit Force Pvt. Ltd., she revealed.
Prior to her Everest climb, she trekked Annapurna Base Camp in 2012 and Everest Base Camp in 2013. Following that, she attempted to summit Mera Peak, which is 6,476 meters high.
“I failed that attempt. After that, I continuously trained in the gym, running, and strength workouts. In May 2024, I successfully summited Lobuche East Peak, 6,119 meters high,” she said.
