Although the government claims that its first 100 days have been successful, opposition parties have categorically declared it a complete failure. The opposition is protesting both in parliament and on the streets, citing reasons such as Prime Minister Balen Shah’s lack of accountability to the legislature, the displacement of squatters without alternatives, and inappropriate remarks and conduct by ministers. Renowned leader of the Nepal Communist Party and National Assembly member Renu Chand has criticized this government for being irresponsible and warned against violating constitutional provisions that were established at the cost of the people’s blood. Her 5-minute and 22-second speech delivered on 19 Asar in the National Assembly has gone viral on social media.
Her core message is clear—she warns the government to end its rule by fear. In an interview, Renu Chand commented that ordinary citizens rarely pay close attention to the National Assembly, describing this as a limited concern. She stated, “That day there was a technical issue. Both the clock and the microphone were broken. After maintenance, the assembly resumed nearly an hour and a half later.” She added, “We observed that people prefer this style? Short and clear statements are easier to understand than lengthy explanations.”
Renu Chand questioned the quality of previous National Assembly members and said, “Perhaps this is why there is a perception that the National Assembly receives little attention? After defeat in elections, members’ terms might not even be completed.” She further noted, “The government had promised dialogue with the public, but the needs of the Far-Western region were ignored.” She criticized the government for adopting an authoritarian approach despite assurances to resolve the squatter issue within 60 days. She pointed out that misleading the public is not new, but the difference lies between failing to fulfill promises and outright deception.
She said, “We have asked for votes many times, but the public has never returned our votes before. Yet this government is asking for their votes back within just two months.” Expressing disappointment with the government, she concluded, “I have come to the conclusion that this government has become even more corrupt.”
Renu Chand also discussed the weakness of the opposition and the Prime Minister’s lack of responsibility, stating, “The Prime Minister is not accountable to the parliament that elected him.” Emphasizing the importance of public trust, she said, “We must acknowledge past shortcomings and engage in self-criticism.”
