The Uruguay Football Association has appointed former player Diego Forlan as the interim head coach of the national football team. Following a disappointing performance at the World Cup, coach Marcelo Bielsa resigned, and Forlan has been given the responsibility until March 2027. The newly appointed coach will also serve as the head coach of Uruguay’s U-20 team alongside the senior squad.
Forlan, who won the Golden Ball award at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has now been named the new coach of Uruguay. He has represented Uruguay in the 2002, 2010, and 2014 World Cups and has played for renowned clubs such as Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid. At 47 years old, Forlan faces the challenge of improving Uruguay’s performance, which has recently weakened in international competitions.
Uruguay, a two-time World Cup champion, was eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After losses to Spain and debutant Cape Verde, Uruguay managed only two draws and one defeat, accumulating just 2 points. Following the disappointing World Cup results, Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa left the team. The Uruguay Football Association has announced that Forlan’s initial contract will last until March 2027.
