France secured its place in the semifinal by defeating Morocco 2–0 in the quarterfinals. Having topped their group by overcoming Senegal, Iraq, and Norway, France also triumphed over Sweden and Paraguay in the round of 16.
Spain’s campaign in the initial stages was below expectations. After a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opening match raised questions, Spain then defeated Saudi Arabia 4–0 and Uruguay 1–0 to finish as group winners.
