In the 1982 Falklands War, Argentina suffered defeat at the hands of the United Kingdom. Many Argentines, grappling with the pain of that loss, often attribute the outcome to the valiant Gurkha soldiers. The unyielding courage and heroic contributions of the Gurkhas played a crucial role in securing a decisive victory for Britain. One war hero, Hemkumar Shrestha, recalls the challenging conditions of the time and the role of the Gurkha troops on the San Carlos battlefield.
Hemkumar Shrestha, who has been running a restaurant business in the United States since the war, regards his experience in the Falklands as a proud chapter of his life. While discussions of Argentina and Lionel Messi dominate during the World Cup, the memories of the Falklands War also hold significant weight. Over the 74-day conflict, Argentina suffered heavy losses and saw its dream of capturing the Falkland Islands remain unfulfilled. It is widely believed that the Gurkhas’ support was instrumental in Britain’s unexpected triumph.
Hemkumar Shrestha’s story begins in Khandbari, Sankhuwasabha. Born in 1946 into a family of five brothers and three sisters, he received education only up to class five and worked tending cattle. Inspired by the agility of the British Gurkha soldiers, he aspired to become a Gurkha. Upon hearing of a recruitment drive in Dharan, he traveled from Sekha to Dharan to enlist in the battalion. At the age of 18, he joined the Gurkha battalion.
During the war, the Gurkha battalion displayed indomitable courage in battle. On May 21, 1982, British forces advanced through Goose Green toward Stanley. The Gurkha soldiers defended by digging trenches with overhead protection to shield against air and ground attacks. Through remarkable bravery, the Gurkhas ultimately achieved victory. Following the war’s conclusion on July 16, 1982, the Gurkha troops returned to the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on his Falklands War experience, Hemkumar Shrestha said, “Whenever I talk about the Falklands War, I feel as if I am right there on the battlefield.” Although he fought on Argentina’s side, he even expressed views supporting England in the ongoing rivalry. The upcoming World Cup match between Argentina and England remains eagerly anticipated.
