The FIFA World Cup 2026 final, held between Argentina and Spain, is on track to become the costliest event in sports history. Resale ticket prices have eclipsed records set by both the Super Bowl and NBA Finals. The New York Times reported that the average resale ticket price for the final, scheduled for Monday at New York’s MetLife Stadium, has soared to unprecedented levels.
The high prices are attributed to Lionel Messi’s attempt to win his second World Cup title, global demand, and high attendance at the tournament. The average resale price for a World Cup final ticket has reached $12,751, exceeding the $10,540 Super Bowl record set in 2024 (Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers). With just two days before kickoff, the cheapest tickets available on major resale platforms were listed at approximately $7,600.
Premium Category 1 seats were being offered for more than $11,000. No prior sporting event has recorded such a high average resale price. Approximately 20 percent of total ticket purchases for the final on the primary resale platform StubHub have been made by international spectators, compared to only 4.5 percent for the 2024 Super Bowl. The likelihood that this could be Messi’s final World Cup has further driven demand, though ticket prices had begun climbing even before Argentina secured their place in the final.
The size of the stadium also plays a role. New York’s MetLife Stadium, with a seating capacity exceeding 80,000, is larger than recent Super Bowl venues yet still managed to sustain record-breaking resale prices.
