Military officials have confirmed that two US soldiers were killed and one remains missing following an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack in Jordan on Friday.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has reported that four American soldiers were transferred to hospitals in Jordan for medical treatment, with some having already been discharged. Other personnel with minor injuries have returned to duty.
The identities of the deceased soldiers have not been released by US military officials, and no further details regarding the circumstances or exact location of the incident have been provided.
CENTCOM stated that under the direction of President Donald Trump, a new phase of airstrikes against Iran commenced late Saturday night.
These were the eighth consecutive nights of airstrikes aimed at degrading Iran’s capability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the CENTCOM statement.
What Else Did CENTCOM Say?
The purpose of these operations was to “immediately punish the forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responsible for the attack on American forces in Jordan last night,” the statement added. No additional information has been disclosed.
These events began about a week ago amid heightened tensions.
During this period, Washington reinstated blockades of Iranian ports, which prompted Tehran to announce a closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, a preliminary ceasefire between the two sides ended in less than a month.
Written Statement from Iranian Supreme Leader
Late Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei issued a written statement accusing the United States of repeatedly violating agreements.
Khamenei said, “This has revealed a fundamental truth: the American President’s signature is completely unreliable and worthless.”
Following the attack, although not as publicly vocal as before, the new Supreme Leader stated that the US is seeking to escalate the conflict and Iran will respond firmly.
The Jordanian military, without providing damage details, claimed overnight success in intercepting ten Iranian missiles within its airspace.
Second US Soldier Death Within a Week
At the beginning of the month, a missing US pilot was declared deceased, bringing the total number of American fatalities to 16. This recent incident marks the second death this week.
CENTCOM’s Saturday statement said: “Two US soldiers were killed and one soldier is missing as a result of the Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack in Jordan.”
CENTCOM will keep the details of the deceased confidential within 24 hours of notifying their families.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth paid tribute on Twitter, stating, “Their sacrifice has strengthened our resolve.”
Iranian government media reported that the IRGC destroyed at least two US fighter jets at Jordan’s Al-Azraq military base on Saturday morning.
However, when contacted, CENTCOM declined to provide details.
Earlier, the US Department of State advised American citizens worldwide, particularly in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution.
At Least 50 Deaths in Iran within Three Weeks
A ceasefire agreement initiated between Washington and Tehran in June collapsed within weeks, with President Trump announcing the termination of the deal on July 8.
Iranian government media, citing the health ministry, reported that at least 50 people have died and over 500 have been injured in US attacks over the last three weeks.
According to official figures, since February 28, thousands have been killed in the conflict between the US and Israel in the Middle East, with most casualties occurring in Iran and Lebanon.
There have also been accusations that both Iran and the US have targeted critical infrastructure in recent days.
