6 Foods You Should Never Store in the Refrigerator

During the summer, it is not always suitable to store all food items in the refrigerator to keep them safe. Some foods can spoil faster or become toxic when chilled. While it is common to refrigerate food, beverages, and vegetables brought home during hot weather, not all foods are appropriate for refrigeration. Sometimes refrigeration can cause food to spoil faster. Improper storage can promote bacterial growth, leading to food poisoning. Therefore, it is important to know which foods should never be kept in the fridge.

Potatoes are an essential vegetable in every kitchen, but storing them in the fridge is harmful. Chilling converts the starch in potatoes to sugar, altering their taste and texture. Potatoes should be kept in a dry, well-ventilated, and dark place. Onions, due to their moisture content, quickly become soft and spoil when refrigerated, so it is better to keep them in an open, dry area. Garlic also changes flavor when stored in the refrigerator. It should be stored indoors in a dry place free from moisture.

Bananas spoil quickly and should never be refrigerated. Keeping bananas in the fridge causes their peel to turn black and the fruit to degrade. Honey becomes hard and difficult to use if refrigerated. It is best to store honey at room temperature in large sealed containers. Tomatoes should also not be refrigerated because the cold destroys the enzymes responsible for their flavor, causing loss of natural aroma and freshness.
