A woman in Australia has given birth to four identical quadruplets, all sharing the same genetic makeup. These babies were conceived naturally, making this event extremely rare. The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital had declared the pregnancy “high risk.”
On July 14, at 28 weeks and 4 days gestation, the woman delivered four girls via cesarean section. These quadruplets are monozygotic, meaning they originated from a single fertilized egg that divided into four embryos. According to the hospital, 34-year-old Janitor Naamoana and her husband Jortham already have four children. The couple was astonished upon learning they were expecting quadruplets.
Dr. Alexa Bendel, who monitored the mother’s health from the early stages of the pregnancy, stated, “The birth of such identical multiples occurs in roughly one in every 15 million pregnancies from a single mother. It is particularly unique that all four share a single placenta, a first-time observation for us.” Janitor’s pregnancy was classified as high risk, and she was admitted to the hospital at 25 weeks.
“It was believed that if the pregnancy could be prolonged until 28 weeks, the outcomes would improve,” Bendel said. “Thus, the birth of four healthy and beautiful babies at 28 weeks and 4 days is truly remarkable, and we are extremely grateful to have been part of it.” The newborn girls were named Emily, Harriet, Katharine, and Alexa. Dr. Bendel also named one of the babies ‘Sapat,’ describing it as a “beautiful honor.”
