This decision followed nationwide protests triggered by the recent dismissal of the popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Initial speculation suggested Fedorov’s removal resulted from disagreements with Sirski, and Sirski’s subsequent dismissal has strengthened these views, according to reports.
General Mykhailo Drapati, a 43-year-old war-experienced officer, has been appointed as the new military chief, replacing Sirski. Drapati is regarded within the Ukrainian military as a relatively young commander with a modern outlook who prioritizes innovation. In contrast, 60-year-old Sirski was criticized for adhering to Soviet-era military doctrines. Following his appointment, Drapati posted on Facebook, affirming his commitment to work responsibly with respect for the troops defending the nation, while also acknowledging Sirski’s efforts to strengthen the Ukrainian army.
In a video message shared on social media Tuesday night, President Zelensky thanked Sirski and praised his role in the successful defense of Kyiv during Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Zelensky also revealed that on the same day he met with former Defense Minister Fedorov and offered him a “suitable role” within the government, though it is unclear whether Fedorov has accepted the offer. Last week, Yevhen Khmar, a former senior official of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), was appointed acting defense minister, succeeding Fedorov. Zelensky confirmed that all decisions will be implemented formally.
