Nepal Achieves Outstanding Success at International Mathematics Olympiad with Three Students Winning Medals

The Nepalese team made history with an outstanding performance at the 67th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) held in Shanghai, China. Nepal set a new record by scoring 57 points, surpassing their previous best of 46 points. Out of 117 participating countries, Nepal ranked 84th, surpassing 33 nations in the competition. Nepali students Prasiddha Thapa, Ayam Acharya, and Nisan Khatri proudly earned Honorable Mention medals, bringing honor to Nepal.

Held from July 10 to 20, this prestigious global mathematics competition saw these three students, Prasiddha Thapa from Sankhuwasabha, Ayam Acharya from Lalitpur, and Nisan Khatri from Dhading, each receive Honorable Mentions, enhancing Nepal’s reputation. Other team members Mission Joshi from Bardiya, Yugantar Kalakheti from Morang, and Arij Pokhrel from Pokhara also delivered strong performances, significantly contributing to Nepal’s overall score.

According to Hari Prapanna Kandel, President of the Mathematical Association of Nepal and team leader, Nepal outperformed 33 countries among the 117 participating nations. Nepal first joined the International Mathematics Olympiad in 2017, held in Brazil. This year marked Nepal’s tenth participation in the event.

Event coordinator and association secretary Shavi Dhungana emphasized the need for regular national and international training for students to achieve even better results at the international level, along with increased support from government agencies. The Nepalese team returned home on July 21.
