Car Rams Crowd at Berlin Pride Event: One Dead, 16 Injured; Suspect Sought by Police

A car collision at the Berlin Pride event resulted in the death of one person and injuries to 16 others, according to police. Authorities have identified a suspect but have not yet made any arrests, intensifying the search for the individual across Germany’s capital. The incident occurred around 10 PM local time on Saturday near the Tiergarten Park, close to the iconic Brandenburg Gate.

“The driver of the white car struck numerous people… many are injured and some are in serious condition,” police shared on social media. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the incident as a “horrific event” and pledged a full investigation. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned it as an “attack on our society, which is founded on freedom and open values.” Following the event, the Pride celebration was cancelled.

In a press release on social media, Berlin police confirmed the identification of a 21-year-old suspect named Abdul B and stated the man is currently sought after. Authorities have described Abdul B as being “associated with Islamist ideology.” As of now, he remains at large, and the motive behind the attack has not yet been disclosed.

Police also reported that at least one assailant exited the vehicle and attacked some individuals with a knife, causing further injuries. Jared Reed, a reporter from DW in Berlin, told the BBC that amid thousands of attendees, police are conducting a wide-scale search for suspects in central Berlin. Authorities have appealed to eyewitnesses to submit any photos or videos related to the incident.
