Fear of the ‘Brain-Eating Amoeba’ Spreading Worldwide

Scientists have identified an increasing trend in the risk of a rare and often fatal brain-infecting amoeba spreading across various parts of the world.
Known scientifically as Naegleria fowleri, this parasite commonly enters the body through the nose and attacks the nervous system and brain. Experts have noted that as global water temperatures rise, this microorganism is expanding its presence into new regions worldwide.
In 2014, 11-year-old Jordan Smelski lost his life to an infection caused by the amoeba while vacationing in Costa Rica.
Concerns about this pathogen have resurfaced following an outbreak in the southern Indian state of Kerala a few years ago, where over 200 people were confirmed infected.
