The U.S. military has launched a new offensive against Iran in response to attacks on its military bases and ships located in Jordan and the Strait of Hormuz. The United States and Saudi Arabia have jointly conducted military operations targeting Iran-backed groups in Iraq. Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman emphasized the importance of de-escalation while noting there are no signs of an immediate resolution to the conflict that has persisted for five months.
The U.S. military claims to have initiated a new assault against Iran. The offensive follows a sudden attack by Iran on American forces stationed in West Asia. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) posted on the social media platform X, stating, “This strike is a firm response to the Iranian rocket attacks on U.S. forces in Jordan and American vessels in the Strait of Hormuz conducted on Tuesday.”
The scope of this conflict only expanded the day before, with these new attacks following immediately after. The United States and Saudi Arabia publicly announced joint military operations targeting Iranian-backed groups in Iraq. In February, the U.S. and Israel commenced military action against Iran, at which time then-President Donald Trump had predicted, “This war will be over within weeks.” However, the conflict has now stretched over five months with no clear signs of imminent resolution.
On Wednesday, Axios cited a U.S. official reporting that Trump met with Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman in the UK. According to the official, Khalid bin Salman stated, “Saudi Arabia is making efforts to reduce tensions.” Efforts to obtain a response from the White House regarding this matter were made. Despite a period of calm, hostilities have once again intensified.
